Today while uploading a video to YouTube I noticed that Music Publishing Rights Collecting Society filed a copyright claim against my Alsea Falls Loop Motorcycle Ride video. The content type they claimed ownership over is “Musical Composition.” There is one small problem with this copyright claim. There is NO music in the video. None whatsoever. The only noises are the wind, the open road, and my motorcycle engine revving. This means that either Music Publishing Rights Collecting Society are a bunch of scumbags and file bogus claims against every video they can find or the algorithms Google uses to automatically discover infringing content are very, very flawed.
I filed a dispute to challenge the copyright claim. We shall see how Google responds. It is stuff like this that makes me want to keep hosting my own videos even if that means they won’t be seen as widely. Or for that matter, go use a different service such as Vimeo. Don’t screw this up, Google. I’d rather not have to relocate all of my videos to a different, less spammy service.
