Final Drive Options for the Honda PC800 Pacific Coast

For some time I have been interested in replacing the final drive on my Honda Pacific Coast with the final drive off of a VT1100. Several people on the IPCRC have reported success doing this job. I had seen several different years and models of VT1100 final drive used and was confused over which ones would actually work. Thus I embarked upon looking at the microfiche available for all years and models of the VT1100 and PC800 to see the differences.  After the below research I finally purchased a VT1100 final drive unit and installed it on my PC800.  The results are very pleasing.

This first table shows all of the model years and all of the final drive configurations for the VT1100C, VT1100C2, VT1100C2-2, VT1100C3, VT1100D2, VT1100T, and PC800.  The bolt pattern is an important note.  The PC800 uses a 4-bolt pattern.  Only the first two years of production of the VT1100C (1985-1986) used a three bolt pattern.  Stay away from these.  The rest all have the same bolt configuration as the Pacific Coast.

This table shows the six final drives that were used across all models of VT1100 and PC800.  Note that the first one, with the red highlight, is not usable on any of the other models because of its three bolt pattern.  Now that we know which final drives were used, we can investigate those specifically to see what the differences were in critical components.  We will also limit our further analysis to only the five models of final drive with the four bolt pattern.

So what does this table tell us?  Out of the five final drive assemblies analyzed above, the four assemblies from the VT1100 series of motorcycles with the four bolt pattern (all but the first two years of VT1100C production) have identical gear ratios.  The PC800 has a different gear ratio from these four.  From what people have reported on the IPCRC, this means that any of the four VT1100 final drive candidates will give the same performance gains in dropping RPM at high speeds and creating “taller” gearing.  The change in gear ratio is reported to be from 3.400 (10/34T) to 3.090 (11/34T).

Another insight is that there are two different case cover styles that were used.  The VT1100C2 from 2005 to 2007 and the VT1100C from 1992 to 2007 used the same case while the other two used a different case.  The PC800 used yet a different case.  This is okay, however, because of the widespread success of people attaching VT1100 final drives of various types to their PC800s without major problems.  More on this in a table further down.

An important insight gained from the above table is that the pinion joint is identical across all four VT1100 models and the PC800.  This means that the shaft drive will attach to any of the different final drives without problem.

The dust guard is another interesting item that differs between models.  Two of the VT1100 models use one type while the other two use a different and the PC800 uses a third different model.  I suspect that the dust guard belonging to the PC800’s final drive would need to remain if you were to swap your final drive for a VT1100 model.

The gear case cover appears on the microfiche to be the part that actually transfers power from the final drive to the wheel.  The PC800 shares a common cover with the VT1100 models except for the VT1100C in the 1992-2007 model years.  I suspect this means that if you were to pick up that particular final drive from ebay, you would need to use the cover from your PC800 final drive.  The others though should be interchangeable on this part.

The part labeled “Collar B, RR.” is the same across all of the VT1100 models but differs on the PC800 model.  Again, I believe that the PC800 collar might need to be kept rather than use the VT1100 model.

The stud bolts that are used to connect the final drive to the shaft drive housing differ between three of the VT1100 final drives and the PC800.  The PC800 however does share the same bolt studs with one of the VT1100 final drives.  I believe this could translate into needing to swap out the shorter studs on three of the VT1100 final drive options for longer studs from your PC800 final drive.

The final puzzling piece is the last two items on the final drive used by the VT1100C2 2005-2007 model years.  They don’t appear on any of the other final drives.  I’m not quite sure what to make of them.  My guess is they won’t make much of a difference.  This is something you should decide for yourself though.

Now you’re asking yourself what does all of this mean?  The table below boils down the differences between the models to what I believe to be the key elements.

Reviewing the archives of the IPCRC, I see that a member reported having to swap in the dust guard and collar from his PC800 to the 2004 VT1100 drive he purchased.  I do not know at this time if it was from a VT1100C or VT1100C2.  Another IPCRCer reported having to use the axle collar from the VT1100 final drive he purchased to make the final drive and tire fit correctly into the PC800 swingarm.  He reported using PN:42620-MN5-000, “collar, RR axle distance”, in my Parts Catalog, p. 86, #6.  A third IPCRCer reported having to swap a plastic ring (the dust guard?) from his PC800 final drive to the VT1100 final drive.  A fourth also reported needing to swap the dust guard.  Although I have read previously about people swapping out their final drives and which parts to replace, I can’t lay my hands upon those messages at this point in time.  As I get more information on this subject, I will update this post accordingly.  The below table is capturing the information as I receive it.

For those doing the swap, Ting has made a good video of one way to swap the final drive unit.

  1. Hi Douglas. How do I decide if a VT 1100 Final drive offered on Ebay is compatible with my PC800. Seems to me all I have to care about is that the final drive should not be of the three bolt pattern type. As long as it has 4 bolts, it fits – is this correct? Kind regards jesper Milling, Denmark.

    1. Hi Jesper!

Yes, any 4 bolt will fit. That should correspond to 1987-2007 model year VT1100 bikes. You will probably need to swap the dust cover ring from the PC800 final drive to the VT1100 final drive.

It took me a couple hours to do the swap on my own in my driveway.

I really like the higher gearing for cruising on the freeway but it is a little annoying around town in stop-and-go traffic because I have to slip the clutch more. If I was only riding around town, I would keep the PC800 final drive. But I do a lot of highway riding so it makes sense for me to have the VT1100 final drive.

If only there was a 6th higher gear in our gearboxes, then the PC800 final drive would be perfect for our bikes. Oh well 🙂

      Cheers!

  2. Hi very helpful. I have a honda p. C and thinking of changing the diff ! Thanks t. G. Ballantyne over here in northern Ireland..

    1. Hello Thomas,

I’m glad it was helpful! I have enjoyed the VT1100 final drive that I put on my PC800. I’ve been riding it for about a decade now without any problems.

      Cheers from Moneterey, California

  3. I have a 1998 Honda pc800 which just turned 10k. What years front brake calipers are interchangeable? Mine has the anti-dive on the left. I’d also like to get air deflectors that clamp to the bottom of the mirrors (like the GL1500s). Will those work? What improvements did you receive by changing the final drive to one from a VT1100 (mpg, vibes etc)? What disadvantages did it bring (longer clutch ride, Pinging at low speed riding etc)? I’m a commuting rider, so I don’t want to regret big and costly changes. What tires seem to work best on this machine (longevity, handling, brands or even auto tires via “the dark side”)? What brake pads and shoes do you recommend?
I got this one with 8k on it ($3,000) and have wanted one since they come out in 89. Couldn’t be happier after only 2,000 miles on it. I’ve worn out so many bikes I can’t even remember them all anymore. My last 4 were Gold wings which I loved putting 180-200k on each one, but I’m 63 and only 5’8” tall so rather than wait till I HAD to scale down
when I found this one I sold my wing and am not sorry. It’s just more difficult to customize this one.
    Thanks for your time,
    Bob DeSantis

    1. Howdy Bob!

Easiest way to find the compatible calipers is to check the parts microfiche:

      https://www.douglasvanbossuyt.com/honda-pacific-coast-pc800-parts-list/grid-number-f3/
      and
      https://www.douglasvanbossuyt.com/honda-pacific-coast-pc800-parts-list/grid-number-f4/

To me it looks like 1997 and 1998 calipers are interchangeable. There are at least minor differences with calipers from earlier model years I think mainly due to the 97 and 98 models not having the full plastic disk covers.

I’m not sure if air deflectors will work. I can’t recall seeing anyone put those on a PC but it doesn’t mean you can’t. I have a set of Baker Built Air Wings that I need to install on my bike that help to deflect air from the engine cowl vents and around the legs.

The main benefit for me with the VT1100 swap is the bike feels more comfortable on the freeway. I don’t feel like I’m running out the engine trying to keep up with traffic. Otherwise mileage is about the same. I didn’t have any vibrations from the final drive before or after the swap. Biggest disadvantage is you’ve gotta slip the clutch a bit more starting in first gear and the gearing in general is a bit different and takes a few rides to get used to. I generally keep my RPMs above 3000 (that’s where the power is on the PC’s engine) so no engine issues with the VT1100. If you ride at higher speeds a lot, then the VT1100 swap is probably useful. If you don’t, then you don’t have a good reason to do it.

There are many opinions on tires. I personally have run Metzeler ME880 tires for the last decade and I will switch to Metzeler ME888 tires the next time I need them. I’ve seen some folks report other types of tires can last up to 25k miles. I usually get about 15k miles out of the Metzeler tires. There are a lot of strong opinions on “dark side” tires as well.

I just use the Hondaline brake pads and shoes. If I can get a part from Honda, I generally do.

You’ll get at least 200k miles out of your PC before you need to think about any really major services to the bike. There are a few examples that hit 300k+ miles already.

      Cheers,

      Douglas
