Dream, Baby, Dream!

Last week I went up to the Boeing Everett plant to conduct some research with fellow grad students Diane and Chuck.  We were ensconced in a conference room overlooking the Future of Flight Museum.

Looking out from the conference room to the hanging aircraft and various jet engines on the floor below.

Dignitaries getting ready for the unveiling of a Cathay Pacific 777.

The curtains open…

And (through the glare), there she is!  A brand new 777 ready to fly to Hong Kong.

Looking across the Everett airport toward the paint hangars.  A couple DreamLifters were parked in front.  Lots of other aircraft scattered about including somewhere around 30 787’s waiting for their type certification.

The Cathay Pacific jet getting ready to load up and head across the ocean.

DreamLifters up close and personal.

The Boeing plant.

Lots of aircraft on the flight line and one massive tent.

A bevy of 787s parked behind the museum.

The next day, a DreamLifter was parked outside the museum.

Inside the museum.

On the way back south we located a restaurant in Fife, WA named “Poodle Food Good Food.”

That’s good… “Poodle Food Good Food.” Somewhat delectable I can imagine. Now if they had named it “Goldfish Food Good Food” I’m certain I would take a pass. Eating out of a doggy bowl is not inconceivable. I know…I’ve done it a few times. But skimming the surface to slurp up goldfish flakes just doesn’t have any appeal to me. Maybe if I were a scuba diver? And really, really hungry.

And all of this talk reminds me…is “Waddles” restaurant still in business? It’s just south of the Columbia River bridge on the eastside of I-5. I always loved seeing their sign, but I never stopped in to eat. Goldfish food? Pond scum? Not a whole lot of difference when considering whether it’s appetizing or not.

  2. I don’t ever remember seeing a “Waddles” sign although I can’t say I ever looked for it. Hooter is still there though. The owl is hard to miss.

Well that’s amazing. I mention “Waddles” and you mention “Hooters”. Turns out “Hooters” was built on the site of “Waddles”. “Waddles” still exists, just not along I-5.

Here’s a peek back at my era…http://www.pdxhistory.com/html/waddles.html . That was back when the bridge was new and you had to pay a toll to cross. And now I know why “Waddles” was so memorable. If their fare was anywhere near as appealing as their building’s architecture then that was the reason for the longevity of their success. I’m sorry I never stopped in.

  4. One landmark replaces another. I stopped at an old burger drive-in restaurant in Monmouth the other day. It’s a really good teriyaki joint now. They don’t do window-side service anymore though.

I love teriyaki, but I have to make my own. I’ve not found or heard of a good teriyaki joint in Chicagoland. When I mention teriyaki to anyone they think it’s the new sportscaster on WGN TV!
