The Night Heron Returns

Our friendly local night heron has returned to the harbor side of the Coast Guard Jetty at Breakwater. This little winged dinosaur likes to hunt where the water is pretty clear and lots of little fish hide out.
This pup decided to cuddle up to a big bull on the jetty rocks.

An otter eating an abalone

This is the first time we’ve ever seen an otter eating abalone. We know that they do occasionally get lucky and pry an abalone out of a crack in the rocks but this is the first time we’ve seen a sea otter chowing down.

Little bit of jealousy from another otter over that abalone haul!
This is probably a 6 year old abalone. It survived a long time before it made a mistake and was out in the open when an otter came by.

Omnomnomnom!

The otter completely cleaned off the abalone shell of all the meat.

Really stripping that abalone shell clean!

“Hey do you have any leftovers to share?”

We’re pretty sure this is Plucky, our favorite otter. If so, this is something new for Plucky to be eating. Usually Plucky eats muscles.
