Big Sur Hiking

We went down to Big Sur today to hike up to Buzzards Roost Viewpoint. On the way we encountered some gorgeous fog along Highway One.

We hiked up from the state park to Buzzards Roost Viewpoint. The views of the ocean and Big Sur are amazing from up here!

After coming back down from Buzzards Roost, we crossed the river and hiked over to the old homestead cabin.

It’s always so much fun hiking in the redwoods!

Summer at Forked Meadow

I spent a lovely couple weeks at Forked Meadow in August house sitting for my parents. This summer has been very dry but also gorgeous. The creek is starting to dry up which has not happened like this in the last 30 years that anyone in the area remembers. That’s not a great sign for the drought.

The meadows are absolutely gorgeous now that it’s summer. But the creeks are drying up and some areas are getting pretty brown much earlier than they normally would.

A family of deer have been visiting the lower meadow every morning. There is still plenty of forage for them but I wish they’d stay away from the willows. We’ve spent a lot of time trying to re-establish willows in the meadows after the cows mowed them down for 100+ years.

Doing some work up by Mary’s Meadow to prepare for a controlled burn sometime next year. We’ll be doing underburning.

The garage is almost done. And wow it’s beautiful here!

HUGE bear tracks near the upper Exchequer Meadow! It’s probably our friendly neighborhood bear who never gives us any problems and just loves living his best life away from people.

USCGC Morris (WSC-147) Visits Monterey

The US Coast Guard Cutter Morris (WSC-147) stopped off in Monterey on a voyage from the Sacramento area to Texas to a new museum home. This is an Active-class patrol boat dating back to 1927 and was in service until 1971. Pretty neat seeing this old ship go through Monterey on her way to the Panama Canal and points eastward.
