My First Snow in Golden

2013-10-18_06-57-22_772

This morning I woke to a white and muffled world.  While it had snowed a few weeks ago in Golden, I managed to miss the previous storm due to being out of town.  This time I got to experience my first snow in Colorado.

We got about an inch up at my townhouse.

On campus we had about an inch when I arrived but by the time the storm blew past we ended up with just under two inches.  The sidewalks and roads stayed mostly clear.

At about 9:30am the sun burst through the clouds and everything became stunningly beautiful.

“A Friend to Lean On” even had a dusting of snow.

The Great American Beer Festival (and some trains)

STA_1777-STK_1787

On the way to the Great American Beer Festival, I changed trains on the Denver light rail system next to a big Union Pacific Railroad engine yard.  There must have been close to 100 big diesel locomotives idling in the yard.

Out side the Colorado Convention Center, there were all manner of beer trucks parked.  The Left Hand Brewing Company uses a limo to transport beer.

The parking garage on this high rise has an interesting set of flapping metal squares.  It creates a pixel effect when the wind blows.

Waiting in line to get into the beer hall.  Becky had a spare ticket and invited me along to drink some good beer.

Batman says PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

There were bagpipers playing as we all marched into the building to start tasting beer from around the USA.

IMG_1794

In the main hall.  There were thousands of beers available.

IMG_1796

One of the breweries had a chapel setup and were in fact performing weddings.  I’m pretty sure that we didn’t actually get married.

A roving band of bagpipers made trips through the various aisles.

There was a mobile barbershop setup in the hall.  This is the “before” picture.  I decided to get my beard trimmed.

Scrambling Along Climbers Trails in El Dorado Canyon with Eileen

IMG_1187

Over the weekend, Eileen and I went out to hike around in El Dorado Canyon. Jen had shown Heather and me the canyon a few weeks ago.  Now that I am more acclimatized to Colorado’s altitude, I was able to actually hike up and down some of the terrain.

IMG_1188

The scenery is dramatic in the canyon.

IMG_1193

The creek through El Dorado Canyon still is flowing strong even this late in the summer.

IMG_1195 IMG_1196

There were several fly fishers out in the creek.

IMG_1199

We climbed up one of the hiking trails above the canyon.  There are several private residences further up the canyon.  What a place to call home!

Up on a talus slope on a traverse to some of the climbing walls.

IMG_1204

On the far side of the canyon is a mainline for the railroad.  A heavily laden freight train with a variety of cargo was heading downhill.

IMG_1205

At the top of our climb.  We thought about going up and over the mountain but the weather didn’t look the best for such activities.

Eileen scoping out the rock.  She doesn’t like it as much as the rock in Moab in Utah or at Smith Rock in Oregon.
