Paulina Lake

We stopped by Paulina Lake in Newberry Crater.  As we walked down to the water, the cacophony of frogs suddenly stopped and we were left in absolute silence save for the ripple of the water on the shore.  There was a light dusting of snow on the crater rim surrounding us.  Where we’re standing is the center of the Newberry Crater caldera.

When we walked away, the frogs started up again with their songs.

Paulina Creek Falls

We checked out Paulina Creek Falls on our way up into Newberry Crater.  These falls are huge and slowly are marching upriver.

There was just a light dusting of snow on everything.

At the bottom of the falls looking up.

Arnold Ice Cave

Arnold Ice Cave is one of a series of lava tubes in the area that only have access to the surface because part of the cave collapsed after the lava stopped flowing.  There was a LOT of lava pumping through this area at one point in the past.

I climbed down into the cave which wasn’t easy since the old wooden stairs have all been destroyed.  If it was actually icy, it would have been impossible to get into the cave without ropes.  Because it was just the start of summer, we didn’t find any ice.

Heading off to the next adventure after the cave.
