Camping in the Lava Fields

We camped between a couple of lava fields on the southwest side of Newberry Crater for Heather’s birthday night.  The campsite was very cozy.

Our camping setup works pretty well with our Toyota 4runner.

Loading everything up to get to ready to head out for today’s adventure!

Lava Cast Forest

We headed out to the Lava Cast Forest to check out the holes in the lava where trees once stood before they were buried and burned by the advancing hot rocks.

One of the lava casts.  Just imagine when the lava came and burned out these trees!

Looking down one of the old tree holes.

The lava came from up that way.

Here’s a casting from a tree that was fallen over.

This area is really pretty.

Lava Butte Cinder Cone

We stopped by the Lava Butte Cinder Cone to check out the fire lookout on our way to Newberry Crater for our birthday weekend.  It’s been several years since we were up here and the view is as good as ever.

The fire lookout was occupied upstairs with the Forest Service lookout but downstairs we were able to check everything out and get some interpretation with another employee who pointed out some cool features of the surrounding mountains.

We have our faithful Albino Rhino on this trip!
