Transiting Lithuania

I rode the bus from Riga to Vilnius.  Due to longer than anticipated stops in previous countries, I was forced to dash from the bus station to the train station where I barely caught the train to the Polish frontier.

The Lithuanian countryside.

In the Countryside Around Riga

Dmitri’s parents and I went out into the countryside around Riga to take in the sights.  This is at a park/church area.  Some old sort of sailboat set up where people could look at it.

Crosses outside of a historic church.

Up in the rafters of the church.

I had just received a Latvian haircut the day before.

At one of Latvia’s few natural caverns.

A monument to a woman who died long ago.

Inside another church.

A castle from when Germanic knights controlled the Baltic states.

Up in the tower.

At a very large natural cave.

Riga

Arriving in Riga, I was met by Dmitri’s parents at the bus station.  This is the mailbox in their apartment building.

Out on the street in Riga.

American embassy.

A monument.

Sweet van.

An old church tower.

We went up inside this tower.

A model of the skeleton of the tower.

Up in the tower looking out onto downtown Riga.  This is the old city.

The TV and radio tower in the distance.

A 1920s or 1930s era sky scraper.
