Amateur Radio

As part of my 4x4ing hobby, I use amateur radio to communicate with other trucks on the trail and keep in touch with people back in civilization. I operate mostly on 2M but I also have a pair of old 10M radios that were my grandfather’s.

My call-sign is KD7YBQ.

A look inside my radio box in my truck before I finished adding a CB radio. I operate a Yaesu radio in the truck. The antenna is strapped to the roof.

My medium-term plans are to build an automatic weather station using amateur radio as the data link. I am also interested in getting into APRS for tracking the location of my truck in addition to its satellite transponder.

My long term plans are to continue enjoying the hobby. Maybe I’ll play with satellite communications. Or maybe I’ll finally get around to learning Morse code.
