We took a detour on the way back to Denver to check out part of the Saguache Range. It’s a huge group of high altitude mountains that not many people explore but there are many great vistas to experience.
Up on one of the high plains next to an old cabin. A storm was starting to roll in from the south.
I wouldn’t want to get caught out in the open during a big storm.
There are many dirt roads that snake around the mountains here.
This is the grave of Jacob Sattler who was a private in the US Army and who died in May 1881. We found a little information on the Find-a-Grave website that indicates his remains were found in a casket emerging from a creek. He was re-buried with military honors in June 1988.
This would be a lonesome country to get lost in without a map.
We found an interesting little dirt road that we followed over hill and dale, and even through a small stream crossing.
Lots of little roads to explore out here.
A logging access road that ends up dead-ending after 20 miles of driving. It turns out that the road that once connected over the top was closed a number of years ago.
Always choose the smaller, less well-defined trail. The Saguache Range will oblige with beautiful views.
