Anchorage to Seward

I had a few hours to kill after I landed and before bed so I jumped in a rental car and drove down to Seward and back. The Seward Highway is absolutely stunning. And amazingly I didn’t see a single mosquito all the way from Seward back to Anchorage.

It’s really hard to capture just how big Alaska is.

Down at Seward looking out to the fjord.
Cruise ships come into Seward. The Alaskan Railroad ends in Seward as well.
Heading back north to Anchorage

The little cabins on the other side of the lake look like a fabulous place to spend a few days.
Such beautiful views literally around every bend in the road!

Flying to Anchorage

Even though I got a window seat, the old busted plane that Delta has in service on the Seattle-Anchorage route had some pretty scuffed up windows. At least you can get a sense for how huge the mountains are in British Columbia.
Parts of the Inland Passage are visible here. So very cool!
On approach to Anchorage.

There’s the airport and next door the world’s largest seaplane base.
Coming around on final approach. The island just off Anchorage has a wind turbine farm.
A lineup of DC3s still in service on the ramp at Anchorage.

Fish on a Beach

Driving back from Thane we stopped off at a small rock beach to look for salmon and check out some bald eagles.  The name of the game with salmon is spawn and die.  All of the fish we saw were dead.  The bald eagles were lazily picking at some fish carcasses further out on the beach.

And with that we hopped on a plane and returned to Oregon.  Yet another great adventure!  I know I’ll be back to Alaska in the near future.
