Our First Day in St Kitts

Heather and I decided to take a SCUBA trip down to the Caribbean Sea since it had been a while since we had last had our gills wet. We found a nice liveaboard dive charter that starts out in St Kitts, goes through Saba, and then ends up in St Maarten. We flew from Colorado down to St Kitts and stayed in the Bird Rock Beach Hotel the first night to wait for our boat.

The Bird Rock Beach Hotel.

After checking into the hotel, we decided to walk back to downtown Basseterre to check out the town.

This is a nice little island.
A busy street even though many of the businesses were already closed for the day.
The cathedral in downtown Basseterre on the old slave market square. This square is now known as Independence Square. An ugly past and a bright future come together here.
Along the water in St Kitts.
A cool old car we saw on our walk back to the hotel.

Cruise Down the Rio Dulce to Livingston

Evan and me headed down the Rio Dulce to the town of Livingston.  We passed a bird rookery on an island in the middle of the river.  There were lots of birds in the trees making quite a squawk.

Another boat heading down the river.

People in canoes.

Houses on the river.

Lilly pads.

The other people in the boat.  Note the age of the crew.

A stop-off at a hot spring at the edge of the river.

Evan tried out the hot water.

Then we visited a cavern up the hill.

It was very hot inside.

Into the canyon with towering 300 foot tall white cliffs.

Motoring down the river.

Coming to the mouth of the Rio Dulce where it pours into the Caribbean Sea.

We arrive at Livingston.
