Kröflustöð, The Krafala Power Station

The Krafala Power Station has a visitor center that is literally in one of the turbine halls.  To get to it you drive by the heat exchangers and other large equipment.

When I got to the turbine hall, it was closed for the winter.  Maybe I’ll get a tour next time.

Stóra-Víti Explosion Crater

The Stóra-Víti Explosion Crater was created 1724 according to my guidebook.  It’s a pretty impressive water-filled crater.  I decided to hike around the outside of the crater in a driving, stinging wind.

A smaller crater behind the primary crater.

The water is warm enough here that this area appears not to freeze.

Yeah.  Don’t step off the path.

The pipework carries steam or hot water down to the turbines below.

Back in the parking lot I found a Cheap Jeep that had a bit of a problem.  I’m glad I decided against renting one of these vehicles.  The little Toyota Yaris I rented worked just as well, used less fuel, and never broke down.

There are just a *few* parts missing.
