I took a spin on my Honda Pacific Coast PC800 down Highway 1 (the Pacific Coast Highway) to Lucia for some lunch. The restaurant and shop at Lucia burned in the last year but Big Sur Tacos had their taco trailer parked in the parking lot.
Riding down to see the elephant seals
Another PCer came through Monterey on his way south on a rented bike so I tagged along with him all the way to the elephant seal vista point near San Simeon. We then went to Cambria for lunch before I turned back north.
On my way back north I encountered a significant headwind that was rapidly depleting my fuel supply. Rather than chance it getting to the next gas station in Big Sur, I pulled over in Gorda to fuel up. This is one of the most isolated gas stations in the Lower 48 and the price really shows the isolation. They were out of regular and plus but they still had premium at $8.499/gallon. This photo even ended up on some nightly news show because the price was so high. Such is life along the Big Sur coast.
The 2000 Edition of TGPCHPCMY2KMR – The Mother of all PC800 Motorcycle Rides
A true friend of the PC800, Neill Thompson, recently shared these wonderful photos of the year 2000 edition of the The Great Pacific Coast Highway Pacific Coast Motorcycle Ride on the Facebook PC800 group. This was the first official PC800 group ride organized by Leland Sheppard in a long-running series of rides. In total, there were at least 32 PC800 bikes in attendance. This was the high water mark year for the ride with the most PC800 riders drawn together that we know of.
The Y2K ride for PC800s was a *Big Deal* in the PC800 community. Even the local Milpitas Honda dealership rode out the red carpet.
If you have more photos or videos of this ride, please get in touch with me so that I can post them. Thanks again to Neill for sending us down memory lane and Leland for having that archival shot of the group.
