After pulling into the campground at the entrance to Zion Canyon and pitching our tent, we walked up the Virgin River path for a mile or so to one of the shuttle bus stops.

The houses along this part of the Umpqua River are on stilts. Every so often, there is enough of a flood that being elevated 8 feet above ground level is a good idea. I bet it also helps with flood insurance.
