Angel Island Immigration Station

The Angel Island Immigration Station is the western Ellis Island.  However, much worse things happened here than back east.  Various exclusion acts were carried out here which denied many immigrants from Asia entry into the country.

The detention barracks on the right in the back.

The old heating plant.

The bell.

Many ships filled with immigrants tied up on a pier that used to stick out in the water here.

The old administration building used to stand where the steps now are located.

One of the dorm rooms where immigrants slept three high.

Poems etched on the wall.

Summiting Angel Island

Sean and I hiked up Angel Island while Katie walked the perimeter road.  We went at the exact right time of year.  Everything was blooming and super green.  A few more weeks and it will all be brown for the summer.

Looking across the water to the ferry terminal.

A year or two ago, a major fire swept across much of Angel Island.  Evidence still lingers.

Treasure Island in the distance.  San Francisco to the right.

Alcatraz.  The only major thing that I am aware of that I haven’t visited in San Francisco.

A panorama from the top of Angel Island looking toward San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge.  Click through the photo and the subsequent page to see the panorama in full size.  I used Hugin to generate the panorama.

One of the old forts on the island.

An abandoned golf cart bearing the insignia of California State Parks.

They should really dispose of it.  Those batteries could start leaking soon.

An old house that the parks staff uses as accommodations when they overnight on the island.

The Ferry to Angel Island

We boarded the ferry at Tiburon for Angel Island.

Lots of little yachts in the harbor.

Tiburon is an adorable little community.
