Road Trains and a Road House

We encountered our first real road trains parked outside a small hamlet in the great flat of northern Queensland.

These were cattle haulers.  Two levels of cows.

A small four-pump petrol station where we took on supplies before continuing west.

Westward

The march westward continues.  The great expanse of flat nothingness lays out before us like so much straight rope.

An isolated settlement on the Flinders Highway.

Trees gradually give way to empty grasslands.

Straight nothing.

Nothing forever.

The nothing just keeps on going.

More nothing.

Another car!  We got very excited to see someone else on this desolate highway.

A few cows roam out here.  But not much else.

Charters Towers

The expedition stopped in Charters Towers for a quick bite to eat before rolling on.  The town maintains a frontier feel while having modern conveniences and at least some semblance of law and order.
