We stopped off at Lava Butte just south of Bend.  A still-functional fire lookout runs at the top of the cinder cone.

Looking south and west.  In the distance we are probably seeing Diamond Peak and Mount Thielsen.

Heather made a new special friend.  He is probably a relative of Rufus.

The lookout.  I remember going up to visit with the fire lookout staff when I was a kid.  We can’t do that anymore.

The Three Sisters, Mount Washington, and Black Butte

STA_6988-STG_6994

We stopped at the viewpoint along the highway between Sisters and Bend to gaze upon the peaks of the central Cascades.  The Three Sisters are visible just to the left of center.  To the right of center is Mount Washington shrouded in the clouds.  On the far right is Black Butte standing sentinel.

Snow on Tombstone and Santiam Passes

Going up the mountains, we found snow falling at the tops of the passes.  Both Tombstone Pass and Santiam Pass had snow on the top and in fact falling from the sky.
