Mount Stromlo Observatory

The Mount Stromlo Observatory complex houses many of the top research telescopes of Australia.

Sadly it was ravaged by a bush fire several years ago.

The foundations of a building consumed in the fires.

The insides of a burned-out telescope.

Another ruined telescope.

Yet another ruined telescope.

The ruins of a once great telescope.

Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex Reconnaissance

The first order of business in Canberra was to locate and make a reconnaissance of the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex.  On a previous expedition, I had penetrated a similar facility at Goldstone, California.

The first dish is spotted!

Thee expedition maintained radio silence for the duration of the mission.

A dish over the horizon.

After identifying an inside contact and scheduling a rendezvous, the expedition went down the road to another space-related site to spend some time before it was our turn to enter the facility proper.

Morning Jaunt Through Canberra

Following an overnight north of the snow-covered mountains of Victoria, the expedition proceeded in grand style to Australia’s capital city.

Canberra is infested with roundabouts.

One would never now the seat of Australian government is but a scant few kilometres away.

A sighting of the Canberra communications antenna.

The new capital building.
